What Is Roaming?

Roaming refers to using your mobile phone outside your home country on a partner network, so you can send messages, make calls, and access mobile data abroad.

When you’re traveling, your device automatically connects to a local network in the destination country. This lets you stay online even when you’re not within your home network’s coverage area.

Lebara users can manage roaming settings and purchases through the Roaming Cockpit, where you can activate or block roaming, track usage, and optimize your international connectivity.

Why Understanding Roaming Costs Matters

Using your phone abroad can sometimes lead to unexpected charges if roaming isn’t managed carefully. Without a roaming option or package, standard roaming rates often apply, which may be higher than your domestic charges.

Tips to control roaming costs:

  • Set a cost control limit to prevent large bills (for new Lebara postpaid customers, cost control for roaming use abroad is activated by default with a monthly cost limit of CHF 0)
  • Enable airplane mode to completely stop roaming.
  • Use Wi-Fi where available instead of mobile data.
  • Download maps, media content, and travel information before departure.
  • Turn off automatic app updates abroad.

Are There Different Roaming Zones?

Yes, roaming rates and inclusion depend on geographic regions often called roaming zones. These zones reflect different sets of countries that may have varying costs or allowances depending on your provider. To be sure that roaming is included in your plan, always make sure, the country you are travelling to is listed in the zone that your plan comprises.

Lebara differentiates 3 roaming zones:

Note: Roaming Zones and Roaming Regions do not refer to the same group of countries. Roaming packages can either be valid in a specific zone (1, 2, 3) or a region (A, B, C, D). Find more information here: https://www.lebara.ch/en/roaming
